Don't Get Scammed Over the Holidays

When shopping online during the holiday season, be cautious of deals that seem “too good to be true.” Unfortunately, every year, thousands of people become victims of holiday scams. Fraudsters rob people of hard-earned money or personal information, which can take away the festive spirit of the holidays. 

Here are some ways to protect yourself and your wallet this season:

  • Don’t click any suspicious links or attachments in emails or on websites or social media. In most cases, these links or attachments will contain malware designed to harm you in some way.
  • Never provide any personal information over the phone, email or text, if you didn’t initiate the conversation. Be especially wary if a company asks you to update your password or account information. Instead, look up the company’s phone number on your own and call the company. NOTE: SCCCU will never solicit you to provide personal financial information by email, text, or over the phone.
  • Only shop on secure websites. Check for the “https” or a lock in the URL. And never perform any financial transactions on free public WiFi.
  • Check reviews or do your homework before purchasing from a new company online. Verify the legitimacy of the buyer or seller before moving forward with any purchase. Avoid buyers and sellers with unfavorable feedback ratings or no ratings at all. And avoid sellers who act as authorized dealers or factory representatives of popular items in countries where there would be no such deals.
  • Avoid buyers or sellers who request a certain way to ship an item or require a pre-paid gift card or a direct wire transfer for payment. Also, be wary of online sellers who say they’re from the U.S. but respond to questions by stating they are out of the country on business, a family emergency, or other similar reasons. 
  • When shopping online, use a credit card or your digital wallet and check your statement regularly. We recommend keeping track of your cleared transactions and balances using Online or Mobile banking. If you see a suspicious transaction, contact the Credit Union immediately.  
  • Always get tracking numbers for the things you buy online and follow the delivery process. If something doesn’t arrive when it should, immediately contact the seller or merchant. 

And remember: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!
